casa connection

Casa Connection is a small-scale residential infill project with a conscience – to support and encourage more women into the building industry, and fight against disengaged, low-quality local development and urban sprawl.

As an architect, designing your own home is a fairly common occurrence. But when you also become an owner builder, have your first baby, throw in a pandemic, a husband who thinks gourmet dinners consist of toasted cheese sandwiches, and try to keep on top of your busy architecture and interior design practice……why not try to increase gender diversity in the building industry and encourage community engagement while you’re at it? Easy!?

What is Casa Connection?

Strengthening the community

It’s rare to find private property that gives something back to the public. At Casa Connection, the front fence of the existing bungalow will offer an integrated public bench seat and street library. Openable sections of fence in the laneway allow you to say hi to the neighbours, keep an eye on the kids or seek privacy.

Smashing the patriarchy

To demonstrate the potential of women in the construction industry, we aimed to design and build this project with an all-female team. Sadly, we struggled to find suitably qualified women for some parts of the project, which has highlighted the serious gender imbalance rife within the building industry.

+

Building less, but better

Casa Connection is a compact 3-bedroom, all-electric home tucked in the backyard of an existing 100-year-old bungalow. But, what it lacks in square metres it more than makes up for in livability, with generous volumes, a sunny north-facing orientation and huge sliding glass doors opening onto the garden. Because you don’t need more, you need better.

+

Development with a soul

Our suburbs are full of low-quality developments and sub-divisions that feel like strangers in their neighbourhoods. But, development can enhance and celebrate the community. It can offer new family homes or multi-generational living close to existing infrastructure, avoiding the need for more sprawl. You can’t stop progress, but you can make it meaningful.
